Ultrafine 3M Abrasive Sponge
3M Softback Sanding Sponge
The 3M Softback Sanding Sponge sands hard-to-reach areas on cars, trucks, and vans, such as headlight openings, door handles, door locks, and other locations. The soft, flexible foam backing conforms to practically any profile or shape of a vehicle. These sponges are coated with long-lasting aluminum oxide abrasive.
Makes sanding difficult
When you need to sand a hard-to-reach location or need to sand a unique profile evenly, choose a 3M softback sanding sponge for its ability to conform to most any shape or reach difficult spots. The soft foam backing is more flexible than conventional paper-backed sandpaper. To access tight locations, the foam backing has been made relatively thin compared to many other sanding sponges. Use these sponges for hand sanding applications where you need more precision and detail than can be achieved with machine sanding methods.
Sanding sponges for many applications
3M Softback sanding sponges are extremely versatile abrasive products. The sponges have a mineral coating of aluminum oxide on a foam backing with a waterproof adhesive system, allowing you to use these sponges for both wet and dry sanding. These sponges are especially useful for helping to remove fingerprints.

A variety of abrasive grades
These sponges are available in a range of grades, including microfine (grades 1200 – 1500), ultrafine (grades 800 – 1000), superfine (grades 500 – 600), fine (320 – 400), and medium (grades 120 – 180). Each grade uses a range of mineral sizes.
Reasons to choose aluminum oxide
Aluminum oxide minerals are a good match for auto technicians who want versatility and economy. The mineral cuts quickly while measuring, mixing, and breaking down. Aluminum oxide is a premium grit with higher fracture resistance, meaning the mineral will break down and renew itself more easily. The breakdown continuously exposes new, sharp cuts as the mineral wears, maintaining cutting efficiency and extending the life of the abrasive material.
Putting science to work for practical applications
3M incorporates the science behind abrasive materials and products to work for the daily needs of auto body technicians. 3M has combined self-fracturing aluminum oxide abrasives with a water-resistant adhesive on an extremely flexible backing to meet the real-world needs of sanding unique-shaped contours and hard-to-reach places.
